The average doubling time of a malignant cell is approximately 100 days. Therefore, if a cell became malignant today, there would be only about 10 cancer cells at the end of the first year.  Furthermore, it requires about 1 billion cells in order to be detectable and that doesn’t happen for several more years.  At any time during this process, the opportunity for iodine or the immune system exists to destroy and remove this abnormal, pathological cluster of cells and as long as the cluster does not pass through the basement membrane, it is called ‘in-situ’ and is not a problem.  

With adequate iodine in the interstitial fluid surrounding the cells, there is no opportunity for the malignant cells to spread, hence metastasis is halted. An in-situ cluster of malignant cells is no more a problem than a pimple.  

Iodine has the following actions:

1. As an antioxidant by competing with free radicals for membrane lipids, proteins, and DNA.  This antioxidant action can occur through oxidized iodine from food or by local deiodination (biochemically removing iodine from T4 (thyroid hormone). 

2. Initiates the mechanisms responsible for preventing spread of cancer through the interstitial fluid (anti-proliferative) and apoptotic mechanisms through the formation of iodo-lactones. 

3. Treatment with I2  (molecular iodine) causes apoptosis (suicide) in cancer cells.

4. Is a constituent of thyroid hormones.
