According to a study published in Molecular Carcinogenesis (2014), titled “Berberine regulates AMP-activated protein kinase signaling pathways and inhibits colon tumorigenesis in mice,” researchers found that berberine reduced colon tumor number by 60% (P=0.009) in the AOM/DSS mouse model. Notably, berberine caused a 100% reduction in tumors larger than 4 mm (P=0.02), meaning no large tumors developed in the treated group.
The study further demonstrated that berberine activated AMPK, inhibited mTOR and NF-κB, reduced COX-2 and Ki-67 expression, and increased caspase-3–mediated apoptosis. The authors concluded that berberine suppresses colon tumorigenesis through both AMPK-dependent and AMPK-independent mechanisms.
