New Babylon is a fusion of ancient Babylonian stock with the Chaldean tribes — star-worshipping, fire-worshipping magi from the southern marshes and the Arabian borderlands.Already under Nabopolassar the name of Nabu, son of Marduk, is deliberately resurrected. The Chaldeans understood the word “son” literally: Nabu is the legitimate heir who will restore the glory that Marduk himself could no longer guarantee. The deepest symbol of this continuity is archaeological: the very last king of the First Dynasty, Samsu-ditana (c. 1625–1595 BCE), had carried the statue of Nabu into Marduk’s temple Esagila — a ritual act the Chaldeans now interpreted as a 1,000-year-old prophecy being fulfilled.The zenith is reached under Nabopolassar’s son, Nebuchadnezzar II (604–562 BCE). His full name Nabû-kudurri-uṣur literally cries: “O Nabu, guard my boundary stone!” The boundary stone (kudurru) is both territory and cosmic order. Nebuchadnezzar expands it relentlessly: Jerusalem falls twice (597 and 587 BCE), the Judean elite is deported, Egypt is invaded in 567 BCE, Syrian and Phoenician cities are reduced to provinces. At the same time he rebuilds the Processional Way, the Ishtar Gate, the Etemenanki ziggurat — every brick stamped with the proclamation that he is restoring the world exactly as it was in the age of the gods.The ideological programme is total archaism: architects copy plans of 3rd-millennium ziggurats, scribes imitate Old Akkadian ductus and archaic Sumerian phrases, priests unearth and recopy ritual texts that had been forgotten for fifteen centuries, the title “Guardian of Esagila and Ezida” (temples of Marduk and Nabu) becomes obligatory for every king. The New Year festival is turned into theatre of cosmic renewal: the king, represented by a substitute, is publicly stripped of insignia, slapped in the face by the high priest, and only then to receive the symbols of power back from the hands of the priest who embodies Marduk. The message is clear — royal power is secondary, renewable, mortal; the priesthood and the ancient tradition are eternal.Yet this hyper-restoration carries the seed of its own destruction. The more loudly the priests proclaim the supremacy, the more the state becomes a museum. After Nebuchadnezzar’s death the mask falls: palace coups, open war between crown and temple, and finally the strange, almost suicidal reign of Nabonidus (555–539 BCE) — a devotee of the moon-god Sin, who abandons Babylon for ten years, moves the court to the Arabian oasis Teima, and leaves his son Belshazzar to rule the capital.On the night Belshazzar uses the Temple vessels for a drunken feast, a disembodied hand writes on the wall: MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN. The verdict is merciless: the divine essence (ME) has become cheap, the earthly foundation insanely expensive, the kingdom is fragmented and handed over to foreigners.
