    At the centre of Hebrew religious rite was the tribe of Levi. Apart from being scribes (Chewa "Alembi" or "Lemba,") one of their main duties was as dedicated keepers of the sacred fire in the temple. In this role, they fitted the attribute of the keepers of the sacref flame (which in Chewa is "Lawi"); therefore, the 'Lawi', 'Lavi,' and 'Levi.' The name 'Levi,' has the same origin and meaning as 'Lawi,' the flame. "Ma-Lawi" simply means "the people of the flame." I hope this helps.
